High potential and gifted education
Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.
At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.
Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?
What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Congewai Public School we are committed to recognising and nurturing high potential and gifted students, ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive at our school.
We identify students' learning needs in the classroom and use evidence-informed teaching practices to challenge and extend students. We provide learning pathways, including enrichment and extension programs and acceleration.
We partner with other regional schools to deliver teaching and learning experiences and opportunities for all students to develop their potential in all domains: creative, intellectual, physical and social-emotional.
Our supportive classroom environments promote a sense of belonging and encourage risk-taking, creativity and collaboration.
Our teachers engage in professional learning to support the diverse needs of all students, including our high potential and gifted learners.
Our school recognises that every student is individual, and we provide flexible and diverse opportunities for students to explore and grow their strengths outside the classroom.
We are committed to identifying and supporting students with high potential through targeted enrichment, extension and extra-curricular opportunities such as debating, competitions, critical thinking workshops, and STEM. Students participate in our Imaginaturalists program which encourages children to utilise their powers of observation and gives them the skills to express these through fun and creative means.
Student talent is celebrated and extended through visual arts showcases, regular participation in Film By The Vines, hosted by The Cessnock Community of Great Public Schools, music and dance ensembles.
Our students participate in a wide range of statewide programs to extend and enrich their potential.
- NSW PSSA Sporting Pathways
- Premier's Sporting Challenge
- Premier's Spelling Bee
- Premier's Reading Challenge
- Public Speaking Competition
- Film By Competition

Making beautiful coral collage with Imaginaturalists, learning about it’s significance as a measure of global warming.
We love our High Performing and Gifted Education initiatives.
We have been learning about Australian landmarks. What a great opportunity for a STEM activity - build the Harbour Bridge and see how much it will hold.
So much problem-solving, creativity and perseverance (and a good dab of frustration).
We are so proud of each and everyone of our students who took part in this year's Film By The Vines. Your hard work and determination to make our amazing films has paid off.
Two prize winning films: Film By the Vines 2025 - Best Original Story and Best Costumes!
